SKIN DISCOLORATION (PIGMENTATION) Even Out Skin Tone and Balance Out Your Budget Do you have patients suffering from age spots, melasma, sun damage, or freckles? Are they using make-up because they think it is their only option to even out their skin tones? Are they looking to you for answers to these challenging conditions? Skin discoloration is caused by several factors. Some are natural like birthmarks. Others may be related to such factors as sun exposure (e.g. hyperpigmentation), allergies, or immune reactions. Whatever the cause, these undesirable marks are left either as noticeable patches on select areas of the body, or uneven discoloration over the entire body. The most important thing to know is the cause of the patients concern and the fastest solution to correct it. To better understand how to treat these pigmented conditions, we need to look at how the body defends itself against environmental factors (like sunlight and unhealthy work environments) and physical factors (like hormones and trauma). Once the skin is challenged by any one of these factors, it defends itself by activating melanocytes to produce melanin in the form of a melanosome. Then the melanosome is transferred throughout the epidermal cells called keratinocytes to begin protecting the skin with increased pigmentation. In some cases, an uneven distribution of pigment results in the patient's complaint of uneven skin tones (sun damage, melasma, etc). As you explore the arena of skin discoloration, you will find the types of pigmentation concerns to be as numerous as the unsightly shapes they make in peoples skin. These marks can range from disturbing to disfiguring, and most people just want them to disappear. Until now, your patients options were limited to either living with skin discolorations or covering them up. But, times have changed and people are seeking new solutions. AAC has the solutions, and we want to share them with you, so call us today at 800-337-0745 and begin changing the complexions of your patients and your practice.
